Questions About Dental Implants

Free consultation for dental implants!

One of our recent implants cases asked us these questions:

I am missing my four front teeth – I currently have a dental plate (denture). I am considering dental implants to replace my usage of the denture as it’s not ideal for me. I am in my early 20s. I have a few questions:

Q1. The look – As I am still young I am looking for a dental solution for teeth that look authentic and realistic. So people don’t suspect that I have false front teeth. I have been lucky thus far with my dental plate. Although, I must admit, I don’t smile at all, I hide it – in case someone sees that it is actually a dental place. Therefore if I have dental implants, would they look similar or near my original, natural front teeth?

A1. The dental implants will not be visible as they will be the root of your new tooth and will be hidden by your gums. The dental implants will act as an anchor for a crown which will be made to look like one of your natural teeth, and people will not be able to tell the difference unless you told them.

Single Dental Implant before and after patient 1

The patient had lost his upper left central incisor following an accident. A bone graft procedure was carried out to replace the missing/damaged bone followed by an implant restored with a porcelain crown.

Q2. The Feel – I’ve been told that the dental crowns on the implants feel like the crowns on your natural teeth? Is this true? Because on my dental plate, compared to my remaining natural teeth, my plate has a noticeably horrid plastic feeling on the attached teeth. Will the crown feel smooth and natural like my original teeth? Furthermore, I’ve been told the Implants don’t have the ligament that the natural teeth have therefore you can feel the full stress of chewing, is this a horrible feeling or is it bearable and can you get use to it?

A2. The dental crowns on the implants will feel like a natural tooth. You won’t be able to tell that you have a crown or a implant in. With implants you will also be able to chew as normal and there won’t be a horrible feeling.

Q3. Staining – As I’m a British person I do drink a lot of tea. So I was wondering, how easily do the crowns stain? Are they durable or can they stain quite easily?

A3. Crowns are durable but this is very much dependent on the persons lifestyle. The foods and drinks that are known to stain teeth (e.g. coffee, Red Wine etc), overtime can also cause staining to crowns. But if you maintain a healthy oral hygiene routine and brush effectively on a regular basis (at least twice a day) you will be able to maintain your crowns for longer.

Multiple dental implants with an overdenture attached - Before and after patient 1

This patient had unfortunately lost the majority of his teeth and was very concerned about his appearance. 6 implants were placed with an overdenture securely attached.

Q4. Jaw Feeling – Will jaw and mouth feel comfortable months after the implant + crown have been placed? Will they feel exactly like original teeth? Because I know the tooth root is made of hard substance, but since there is metal substance being placed in my jaw (the implant) will there be any different feeling and/or regular pain?

A4. After the healing period of having a dental implant, your implant and crown will feel exactly like one onf your original teeth and you won’t be able to feel the difference.

Q5. Cleaning method – How hard is it to clean your dental implants? Is the regular, recommended two minute enough to clean them or do they need longer?

A5. Your dental implants will not need cleaning as they will be hidden in your gums and covered by the crown. Your crown will however need the same amount of cleaning as your normal teeth do.

Multiple dental implants before and after patient 2

This patient was unhappy with the appearance of the teeth following childhood trauma. 3 upper incisor teeth were removed and replaced with a porcelain bridge on 2 implants, followed by porcelain veneers to improve the overall aesthetics.

Q6. Breath – My last question is breath freshness. Will your breath be prone to smelling less fresh once the implants and crowns are in or can you expect the same freshness of breath you would get if they were still natural teeth? Keeping in mind oral hygiene is maintain to the highest standard.

A6. As long as you maintain the same high oral hygiene standard you will have the same breath freshness.

Single dental implants before and after patient 1

Patient requested a fixed option for the missing upper right incisor which was restored with a bridge. An implant was placed and restored with a porcelain crown and a porcelain veneer on the upper left lateral incisor.

Invisalign clear aligner

The Clear Alternatives To Braces

  • No wires or brackets used
  • Custom made for extreme comfort
  • The nearly invisible way to straighten your teeth without braces!
  • Invisalign uses a series of clear aligners that gently and gradually move your teeth to the correct straight position

Why Use Invisalign?

Invisalign is the closest treatment to being invisible which means it is very discrete and no one will know you are wearing them, unless you tell them!

During treatment you are able to easily remove the aligner while you eat and drink, which also allows you to brush and floss your teeth as normal!

One of the biggest problems with traditional metal braces is the fact that they are rather uncomfortable and quite often the metal causes cuts in the cheeks and abrasions. This is not the case with Invisalign! Invisalign has been designed to be a comfortable and relaxing treatment that provides you with all the benefits of having braces, but without any of the negatives!

Before and after - Invisalign

This patient was unhappy his two lateral incisor teeth being too far back and hidden in his smile as well as the gap in-between his lower teeth. Invisalign was used to straighten his teeth in 11 months followed by teeth whitening.

How Does Invisalign Work?

Invisalign treatment process 1-3

You discuss your needs with one of our Invisalign dental practitioners. Invisalign can be suitable for minor improvements as well as extensive work Using some special software we are able to show you a model of the proposed treatment so you are able to see the results before you even start treatment! After you have been given your treatment plan and you have decided you would like to proceed. Impressions will be taken to be sent off to the dental labs to make a series of aligners to only fit you

Invisalign treatment process 4-6

You wear each aligner for two weeks before moving on to the next one in the series. The aligners are only removed for eating, drinking, brushing and flossing Every 4-6 weeks you will need to come back and see us until your treatment has been completed After treatment is completed, you will need to have retainers to protect your new smile. We also offer vivera retainers – Invisalign’s answer to after orthodontic care!

On Average:

  • Treatment times vary between 9 to 18 months
  • Patients wear between 18-36 sets of aligners during treatment

Am I Suitable For Invisalign?

Invisalign has been specially designed to treat malocclusions (misalignment of teeth) and is suitable for the majority of people!

Toothbrush Gets Technical With Mobile App!

Arrange your free consultation today!

This may sound like a strange concept to combine a toothbrush and mobile app – but an American company (Beam Technologies) has developed the worlds first “smart toothbrush” which has been taking the US by storm and has now also started to enter the UK markets!

The toothbrush is a manual one…but with a twist. After each brushing session the toothbrush will send information about your hygiene routine over to your IOS or android app.

Beam brush toothbrush and app

The “beam brush” records:

  • Brushing duration
  • How often you brush

The mobile app shows the data with an easy to use interface which clearly highlights the important areas, such as: not brushing your teeth twice a day.

The app also contains a timer that plays music for two minutes so you are able to easily stay on track to brush your teeth for the recommended length of time!

Beam technologies have already indicated that they are looking at updating the app to include game like achievements and social media sharing to reward people for practicing a consistent healthy oral hygiene routine.

How many veneers can you have on your teeth?

Arrange your free consultation today!

This is a very good question but it is worth noting that the amount of dental veneers you can have really depends on the broadness of your smile. Generally speaking for most patients you would need between 6-10 veneers for a complete new smile and if you have a narrower smile, you may even be able to get away with 4-6 veneers.

But that being said – Each patient case can be different and really depends on the uniqueness of your smile.

Veneers are not a simple case of saying you want 6 veneers on these teeth and the dentist simply does that. Its a case of examining your smile from all different angles to identify which teeth are clearly visible. You need to take into account that your teeth will look differently from different angles so you want your new smile to look natural and beautiful from every angle.

By having too few veneers for your smile it can give you a very unnatural overall smile which draws attention to the teeth that haven’t had the veneers, which will detract away from the beauty of your new teeth!

Before and after - dental veneers

This patient was unhappy with the dark colour and cracks in her teeth. She was incredibly nervous about having treatment and wanted her smile back. Six veneers were placed on the upper teeth to give her a fantastic result

When creating the perfect smile it is important to understand the smile design principles and to create the perfect smile for the patient undergoing treatment.

How to create the perfect smile

When we have patients come to us who are interested in dental veneers we take our time in assessing their current smile and understanding what issues they currently have with the way they look.

Because creating the dream smile is not as straight forward, we offer free consultations to discuss your needs and to clearly identify how many veneers you will need for a complete and full beautiful smile.

If the patient decides they would like to go ahead with their dream smile, we move on to the following smile design process:

  • Impressions – Diagnostic wax-up (on a model)
  • Trial Smile
  • Prototype
  • Permanent fit

An example of a smile design case can be found here.

Do Apples Rot My Teeth?

Arrange your free consultation today!

We all know the old saying “an apple a day keeps the doctor away” but does it keep the dentist away?

Apples are known to be a very healthy fruit that contains healthy nutrients for the body, such as: vitamin C and Vitamin A – As well as also being a good source for fibre!

As well as being a very healthy fruit that should be included in a healthy diet, they are also an acidic fruit which has caused speculation whether or not they can and will cause tooth decay.

Any acidic food or drink can damage and erode away the enamel of the teeth (overtime) and the enamel is what protects your teeth! Unfortunately once enamel has been eroded or damaged the body is unable to naturally repair it and a trip to the dentist may be required!

Saying that though, your lifestyle and way of eating/drinking acidic products can be a critical factor in the erosion of your enamel and cutting out healthy fruit because of the acidic value is not a recommended option!

For example, eating apples can help clean and break down the build up of bacteria in your mouth as the crunchiness of apples helps build up saliva – which then flushes away bacteria (and can help reduce the chance of developing gum disease!).

Periodontal patient 2

This patient had inflamed, bleeding and tender gums. Periodontal treatment was carried out to improve the situation.

But eating an apple slowly will increase the length of time the acidic juices are in contact with your teeth and therefore increases the likely hood of the acid to erode away the enamel (and this can be said about any acidic type of food or drink).

After eating an apple (or any acidic food) it is recommended to rinse your mouth out with water to flush any remnants of acid off your teeth – Please do not brush your teeth straight away, as this can cause more damage than good.

If you did brush straight away the acid from the apple will have caused the enamel to be weaker and your toothbrush may inadvertently take off the top layer of enamel! It is recommended to leave it an hour before brushing (if possible) but immediately after eating an apple to rinse your mouth out with water.

Can You Have A Tooth Replaced After Suffering From A Heart Attack?

Arrange your free consultation today!

After you have suffered from a heart attack it is recommended that you wait a minimum of 6 months before you have any dental treatment (this can be longer for some patients).

It is also worth noting that before you do undertake any dental treatment that you will have to fill out a medical form so your dentist is fully aware of any health complications you may have.

Before you can actually undergo dental implants your dentist will have to ensure that you are a suitable candidate and that you are healthy.

“What a wonderful team!”

Dear Kelli,

When you asked if I would like to write a testimony I felt I had to go home and think about it.. to think about the words to express my sheer gratitude to Faresh and his wonderful team! I first enquired about dental implants to yourself in April 2011. Since then you have married and I am to be a Grandmother!!

However the steady progress has been worth it and I am grateful that Faresh has not rushed me into making decisions, allowing me to reflect on my care and then proceed at my pace. This was a vital part of my treatment as I had self referred due to loss of faith in the NHS Dental department…often not their fault but the care was hurried and totally inferior to the wonderful care received by Hereford Dental. I had dental implants(2) under sedation and thoroughly recommend it -very similar to Pinot Grigio! Admittedly there was a lot of travelling but it was my choice to attend your practice.

I even got to see the Olympic torch prior to my appointment! Thank you to Lucy and Steph (always smiling) , Jaz for being professional and kind and yourself for always answering my queries honestly but most of all to Faresh a very skilled and patient dentist. I wish him the best of luck with his tutors and hope my pictures don’t frighten them too much!

That was the only painful part-having my photo taken -but I will smile so much more now! Keep up the good work and I will see you in 12 months time.

Can Porcelain Veneers Treat One Crooked Tooth In Worcester?

Arrange your free consultation today!

If you don’t want to go down the route of an orthodontic treatment to straighten the crooked tooth, porcelain veneers can be a suitable treatment to give you your dream smile.

Before and after - Porcelain Veneers patient 3

This patient was unhappy with the shape and position of his two front teeth – we used Emax porcelain veneers to improve the aesthetics of the smile.

Porcelain veneers can be very flexible to meet your needs and could be used to treat one, a couple, or even the majority of your teeth (the exact number of veneers needed will depend on how broad your smile is).

What Are The Advantages Of Having Porcelain Veneers?

  • Veneers can provide quick results where as braces can take considerably longer to treat the affected tooth (will vary from case to case)
  • You won’t even realise your wearing the veneers!
  • If you choose veneers you won’t have to worry about your teeth relapsing after treatment
  • With porcelain veneers there is minimal tooth preparation (if any), so your natural teeth will remain in tact if you ever decided to have the veneers removed

Before and after - Porcelain Veneers patient 2

This lady was unhappy with the colour and shape of her teeth. Ten veneers and one crown were fitted to improve the smile as well as teeth whitening on the lower teeth. She was delighted with the result achieved.

How Much Do Porcelain Veneers Cost?

Porcelain veneers will cost £550 per tooth and we also offer composite veneers which could also be a suitable treatment, at £120 per tooth.

Before and after - composite veneers patient 1

This patient’s main issue was the wear and chips on her upper front teeth. She assumed she would need her teeth shaved down for composite veneers but we repaired her teeth without preparation in one single visit. She was delighted with the end result

Which Treatment Will Give Me The Best Results?

Each patients case can vary considerably which means the most effective treatment for one patient may not necessarily be the best for another. We offer free consultations so we can discuss your needs, examine your options, and answer any questions you may have, to ensure you are fully equipped to decide which is the best treatment for you!
