Acrylic is a type of plastic material that can be used in the creation of dentures. This type of material is great for dentures as it is moldable and can adapt to the changes in your mouth over time. This is most commonly used for complete and partial dentures.
This type of denture are very easy to be altered and are an easy comfortable fit. Due to the moldable material, the technician can easily influence any adjustment required (unlike metal dentures). The other main benefit to this type of material is the fact it is cheaper compared to other types.
The first appointment in this process will involve impressions of your teeth being taken. This will either be taken before or after your extraction (depending on which denture you are having). The majority of cases will have the impressions taken after any extractions, but in the specific case of an immediate denture, the impressions are taken beforehand.
The impressions will be sent to our dental labs where they will be created. All of our dentures are made for the exact requirements of the patient and will be a custom comfortable fit. After we initially fit the acrylic denture, there will be a number of adjustments that will be required. One of the benefits to acrylic dentures, is the fact that any alterations or adjustments can easily be made. Depending on your current situation, the dentures could be attached through metallic clasps (on remaining teeth) or they are self stabilised if there are no natural teeth left.
Maintaining your new dentures is just as important as it was to clean your natural teeth. They can easily be cleaned with a regular toothbrush and toothpaste (special denture cleaner is available too). By ensuring you regularly clean them, you will help protect them from any build up of plaque.
Please take care when you are cleaning them though, as they are not very durable and can break if dropped from a height. We recommend that you clean them over a sink full of water.
In most cases you will not be wearing your dentures while you sleep. This is because it is recommendable that your gums are not covered at all times. But it is very important that you leave your dentures in a glass of water so they don’t dry out.

Will dentures affect my speech?
For many people there is a period of adjustment when you first get your dentures fitted, in which speaking may be more difficult than before. But this is normally a case of getting used to the feel of them, and you’ll soon be back to speaking normally with a little practise. Your Portman dentist will be able to help you with this.

Why do dentures have to come out at night?
This may not be compulsory but it is highly recommended. If you soak them overnight in an approved denture cleaner, they will be clean and fresh the next day.

Do dentures make eating difficult?
Eating may be difficult at first. Eating with dentures is slightly different to eating with natural teeth as they are not rooted as deep in your mouth. You will be used to a biting and tearing method but this will need to be adapted to focus more on biting. It can take some getting used to.
