Zirconia Crowns

What Are Zirconia Crowns?

Zirconia crowns are a type of dental crown restoration that can be used to replace a missing tooth, or to even just improve the function/appearance of an existing worn down tooth. They will be quite often used in conjunction with other treatments, such as Dental Implants (for security/stability), Dental Bridges, or secured in place with a dental cement bond (over your existing teeth).

The compound material of Zirconia (Zirconium Oxide) is a strong type of ceramic which has been safely tested and proven to be used for humans. Zirconia can quite often be found in other medical areas, such as artificial joints, as it offers durability and a high strength.

Why Would You Need Zirconia Crowns?

The main reasons why you would need any type of crown is because of:

  • Losing a tooth or multiple teeth
  • To protect a damaged and weakened tooth (due to decay)
  • Covering a tooth with a large filling
  • Restoring broken/worn down teeth

What Are The Benefits of Zirconia?

Zirconia Crowns offer the following benefits:

Strength – Zirconia offers high levels of strength over other types of crowns and will also last longer.

Aesthetics – They are not only made to function like a natural tooth, but they are also made to look beautiful and blend in with your smile!

Minimal tooth preparation – When fitting a Zirconia Crown there will be very minimal tooth preparation which means if the crown needs to come off at a later date, the original tooth will be better preserved.

How Are Zirconia Crowns Fitted?

With all dental crowns treatments, it will involve two stages:

Stage 1

We will measure (for new crown) and assess your teeth. Before anything happens your dentist will always explain what is going to happen so there will be no shocks and you will be in the know at all times. To prepare the tooth for the crown, it will involve minimal reshaping and a cleaning of the tooth.

We will need to take an impression of your teeth. This will involve a soft putty being placed in the patients mouth. The impressions will then be sent to the dental laboratory where they will fabricate the new crown.

Stage 2

When the crown has been made and sent back to us, we will be ready to fit it in your mouth. Depending on your exact treatment you are having, the crown will be fitted in your mouth (over an existing tooth, secured onto dental implants etc).

When we are fitting the crown we will always strive for the most natural looking and well placed position before we finally attach the crown. We will then give the crown a final polish, making sure the new tooth looks beautiful and blends in with your smile.

Please note that Zirconia crowns and other types of crowns all require the same level of attention and care that you would give to your own natural teeth. This will help prolong their life for a healthy smile.
