Metal base dentures

There are two types of metal dentures: Standard and Modified. Standard metal dentures do have metal in direct contact with a portion of the gum, but the metal used are non-allergic. The modified metal denture is very similar apart from one difference – it does not have any metal in direct contact with the gum. A plastic liner is used between the metal structure of the denture and the gum. Both hard and soft plastic can be used. Soft is the preferred liner, but does need to be relined every year.

Why would I need metal dentures?

Some cases will require the denture to be narrow. If they are made out of plastic, they tend to be very weak and can easily break. Metal dentures offer the required strength in such cases.

Lower jaws can be very problematic when they lose teeth. Using a metal denture can add stability to the jaw and will also be more comfortable for the patient.

Benefits of metal dentures

  • Comfortable
  • Hygenic
  • Offer stability and grips better
  • Easily tighten clasps
  • Durable
  • Precise fit

Disadvantages of metal dentures

  • More expensive than other materials
  • Adjustments are difficult in the future
  • Metal and gum contact can sometime be uncomfortable (but a relining can sort this)

        Do dentures make eating difficult?

Eating may be difficult at first. Eating with dentures is slightly different to eating with natural teeth as they are not rooted as deep in your mouth. You will be used to a biting and tearing method but this will need to be adapted to focus more on biting. It can take some getting used to.
