Instinctively, we all know the power of a wonderful smile. But research from the US now suggests that the British smile itself can be something to smile about.
A Psychologist has analysed US and UK smiles and the 45 facial muscles used to produce them. He found such sharp differences between the way Americans and Brits smile that researchers could spot the difference accurately over 90% of the time.
The British smile by pulling the lips back and upwards, exposing the lower teeth, whilst American part their lips and stretch the corners of their mouth. We Brits are more likely to raise our cheeks when we smile, showing our crows feet at the corners of the eyes- giving rise to a more sincere smile, which is harder to fake. The most representative British smile was considered to be restrained but dignified which scientists have titled The Prince Charles. Most US smiles by contrast are far less expressive.
So, we Brits may have a head start in the global smile league, but too often we throw our advantage away through poor oral hygiene and strained teeth.

The cause of your headache could actually be the way teeth meet when jaw bites together, otherwise know as dental occlusion. When the joints cause pressure to be put down on the nerves, muscles and blood vessels that pass near the head, the result can be headaches and migraines, a condition that affects one in seven people in the UK. Chief Executive of the British Dental Health Foundation, Dr Nigel Carter, believes this information serves as a timely reminder for patients to arrange a visit to the dentist. Dentists may be able to help patients or refer them to a dentist who deals with occlusal problems, as patients teeth may need to be adjusted to meet evenly, as changing the direction and position of the slopes that guide teeth together can often help reposition the jaw. At the Hereford Dental Clinic we offer splints to correct your bite. Call 01432 272238 for more information.

According to a report published in the latest issue of the British Dental Journal (BDJ), one in eight adolescents with prominent, or irregular shaped teeth have experienced bullying, with a negative effect on their self-esteem and quality of their oral health.
The authors found that the children, aged between 10 and 14 years, were at an increased of being teased or bullied by their peers if they had certain dental features: these included maxillary overcrowding; a cleft lip, with or without a cleft palate; an overjet and a deep overbite (i.e. prominent teeth).
They also expressed concern that psychosocial factors are not considered when assessing a child’s need for orthodontic treatment; although they acknowledged that the relationship between the shape of teeth, self-esteem and bullying is a complex one.
Currently the severity and need for orthodontic treatment within the UK is judged on occlusal (bite) and aesthetic impairment without consideration of psychological factors warn the authors of the British Dental Journal report.
Commenting on the reports findings, the British Dental Associations Scientific Adviser, said: As studies show that having well-aligned teeth can influence our ability to make friends and progress in our careers, it’s not surprising that young children pick up on societies ideal of what is perceived to be attractive early on.
Because prominent or irregular shaped teeth can affect a child’s self-esteem, or make them the subject of teasing or bullying at school, its important that these factors are taken into account when referrals for orthodontic treatment are considered.

Studies look at gum disease have concluded that an effective oral healthcare routine could help patients to avoid experiencing still births or developing breast cancer. Such findings are said to corroborate the widely accepted belief amongst healthcare professionals of a systemic link between gum disease and chronic disorders found beyond the oral cavity.
An efficient cleaning method is required to prevent infections in the mouth from travelling elsewhere. However, a standard toothbrush alone is no match for bacteria gathering within the inderdental spaces, nor is dental floss an easy product for some people to use.
Interproximal cleaning promises an excellent solution, which patients can effortlessly incorporate into a daily healthcare routine. Interdental brushes are said to be much easier to employ than dental floss, successfully cleaning debris away from areas that are difficult-to-reach.
Our dental hygienist can recommend what oral hygiene products you require. Call Hereford Dental Clinic on 01432 272238 for more information.

Align technology has launched Invisalign G3, building on the improved feature set introduced to the Invisalign treatment option line introduced in 2010.
Class II and III treatments reportedly make up approximately 40 per cent of all patients in a dental practice, and often require the use of interarch elastics to provide anchorage control during treatment. Doctors previously had to manually cut the aligners to accommodate the use of elastics. However, the new appliance addresses this barrier with new Precision Cuts, which are doctor-prescribed cuts in the aligners to accommodate the use of orthodontic elastics.
New SmartForce features include an Optimized Rotation Attachment for premolars (previously available only for canines), Power Ridge feature for lower incisors (previously available only for the upper incisors), and a lingual Power Ridge feature for upper incisors.
Evolution of the ClinCheck software reportedly makes it easier and more intuitive for doctors to create and optimise Invisalign treatment plans. Using the new drag-and-drop interfaces, doctors have the flexibility to specify the placement and the type of Precision Cuts and attachments on the clear aligners.
The Invisalign Doctor Site is a secure website where doctors access Invisalign patient records, review and approve ClinCheck treatment plans, view their account status, order treatment supplies, and more.

Conventional mechanical treatments are not always suitable for periodontal disease in deep pockets. But, for patients with moderate to severe chronic, adult periodontal disease, Dentomycin can help.
Studies suggest there is a direct correlation between an increase in pocket depth and decrease in the efficacy of scaling and root planning (SRP). However, the gel, with its active ingredient minocylcine (2 per cent), reportedly goes deep into periodontal pockets and binds to the surface of the tooth, helping to combat key periodontal pathogens.
By releasing Minocycline slowly, the gel is said to inhibit destructive collagenases, whilst reducing inflammation and bacterial agents.
A double-blind, multi-centre study has reportedly shown that the gel, used in combination with mechanical treatment, could reduce pocket depth by an average of 42 per cent in just 12 weeks.
So, for patients with bleeding on probing in pocket depths greater than 5mm, the product, in its easy-to-use pre-filled applicator promises an excellent adjunctive measure.

What is Periodontal or Gum Disease?
Most of us have a less serous form of reversible inflammation called gingivitis from time to time. Those who have the more severe form called periodontitis, are at greater risk of losing teeth as they become loose, fall out or have to be removed by the dentist.
Gum disease is an infection affecting the gums, bone and other supporting tissues of the teeth. It is caused by plaque, which is a sticky film of bacteria that forms constantly on all our teeth. Statistics show from the UK adult dental health survey (1998) showed that nearly three quarters (72%) of dentate adults have some visible plaque on their teeth.

Invisible alignment can help you get that awesome smile you’ve always wanted because it’s…
1. Comfortable, because it has no metal to cause mouth abrasions during treatment. And no metal and wires usually means you spend less time in your doctor’s office getting adjustments.
2. Invisible, so no one will know you’re straightening your teeth. So now you can smile more during treatment as well as after.
3. Can be removed so you can eat and drink what you want while in treatment, plus brushing and flossing are no problem.
Invisible alignment is an almost invisible options to straighten your teeth without wearing traditional metal braces. It uses a series of clear custom-made aligners to move your teeth. Invisible alignment also allows you to view your own virtual treatment plan clincheck video when you start, so you can see how your straight teeth will look when your treatment is complete. Invisible alignment can help you get the great smile you’ve always wanted. Call Hereford Dental Clinic on 01432272238 for more information.

Tooth wear is a multi-factorial condition of growing concern and is becoming increasingly significant in the management of patients. People are now retaining their teeth for longer, becoming more aware of their teeth and treatment possibilities and expecting their teeth to last them a lifetime. Although there is usually one predominant cause of wear for an individual, a number or wear processes often occur together, the most common form, especially in the younger age groups, being erosive tooth wear.
One of the effects of tooth wear, erosive tooth wear combined with abrasive wear, can lead to dentine hypersensitivity. This affects about 15 per cent of healthy dentate patients and 96 per cent of individuals susceptible top periodontal diseases.
Interestingly, only a very small area of dentine needs to b exposed to cause the excruciating pain. This can be confusing, as large areas of exposed dentine may or may not cause pain. The dentine tubules need to be patent from the dentine surface to the pulp for pain to be experienced, thus treatment modalities are current, as they focus on dentine tubules occlusion.
Tooth wear, which is said to be the fourth most common dental problem after caries, periodontal disease and trauma, is likely to increase in the future. It’s important to know how to manage these cases with preventative measures, and when to intervene restoratively. White fillings, veneers or crowns can be used to treat this problem. Call 01432 272238 for information.
