Porcelain veneers have successfully improved smiles by making dark teeth look lighter and healthier looking. They can make yellow teeth permanently whiter and gray tetracycline stained (due to medical reasons) teeth look much more natural. Porcelain veneers can make crooked teeth look straight in just a few days. Patients can look and feel more confident, more professional and have a wonderfully natural looking smile. Our cosmetic dentist for veneers in Hereford can offer a free consultation to go over your case

You do not have to have your natural teeth ground down, as porcelain veneers can be totally non invasive without requiring anaesthetic. This does depend upon you case.

If performed by a highly skilled artistic and technically talented dentist, porcelain veneers produce excellent visual results. If you are unhappy with the veneers you already have had done by another dentist (see bad veneers) you can understand the problems with less talented or discount dentists.

Hawley retainers

What is a Hawley Retainer?

A Hawley Retainer is a removable brace made from plastic and stainless steel wire.

Why is a Hawley Retainer needed?

This type of retainer is used to keep teeth straight after the fixed brace is removed.

Will my Dentist provide this retainer?

Your dentist hereford will provide the retainer for use after the removal of your fixed brace.

When will I need to wear it?

The retainer is normally worn full time for 3 months following the removal of your brace, then nights only after this period.

How long will I need to wear it?

You will need to wear the retainer for at least one year following the removal of your brace.  We now recommend wearing your retainer until all growth ceases at around 22 years of age.

What will happen if I don’t wear the retainer as recommended?

Your teeth will almost certainly move if you don’t use your retainer as recommended.

How do I clean my retainer?

You should use a toothbrush and soap. Do not use toothpaste as some products can damage the plastic of the retainer. If you are cleaning the retainer over the sink, as a precaution put water in the sink in case you drop the retainer. Proprietary cleaning agents are available.

What happens if I lose or damage my retainer?

You will need to contact your dentist herefordshire as soon as possible for a replacement.

A Guide to Twin blocks

What is an overjet?

Your top teeth should normally be in front of your bottom teeth by 2-4mm. This is called your overjet.

What are Twin-Blocks?

Twin-Blocks are jaw aligning braces. They are powerful braces, which can reduce an overjet from 10mm to 4mm in just four months.

When should the Twin-Blocks be worn?

Twin-Blocks work by harnessing the power of the chewing muscles and should be worn all the time. However, if at first you find your jaw gets tired, simply leave the brace out for a while and rest your mouth. Put the brace in a safe place – they are expensive to replace. Speak to your dentist Hereford or your Dentist in Hereford about purchasing a brace box.

Should I eat whilst wearing Twin-Blocks?

Twin-Blocks are designed to allow you to eat with the braces in, but if you find this too difficult at first do not worry.

Will taking my braces out to eat and rest my jaw at the start of wearing them upset my treatment?

Try to wear your braces all the time but taking them out to eat until you get used to them will not harm your treatment. Your teeth will still straighten only more slowly.

How do I clean my teeth?

Remove the brace and clean your teeth as normal.

How do I clean my brace?

It is very important to keep your brace clean and this is best done with a toothbrush. If you cannot brush after every meal at least rinse the brace with water. Talk to your Herefordshire Dentist about a special cleaner for braces.

Do I turn the screw?

The upper block usually has a screw fitted which you will need to turn. This should be turned once in the direction of the arrow on two days of the week e.g. Sunday and Thursday.

What about sports?

It is best to take the braces out when playing sports. Remember to put your name on your brace box.

What about playing musical instruments?

It is best to remove your brace when playing certain musical instruments. Again store your brace safely.

What happens if the brace breaks?

Sometimes the plastic or wire parts of the brace break. If you are still able to wear the brace, do so, but if not telephone your Hereford dentist for an early appointment.

So what happens if my teeth need to be straightened?

Since Twin-Blocks are jaw aligning braces, if the teeth themselves are crooked a fixed brace to correct your teeth will need to be fitted after the Twin-Block treatment.

Canine in the palate

Where is the upper canine?

This tooth forms high up in the mouth to the side of the nose.

What is a canine in the palate?

The upper canine can fail to grow into its proper place in the mouth. It can often end up in the palate behind the front teeth.

Why has this occurred?

The canine forms high up under the eye (eye-tooth). As it grows down it can lose its way!

Will the tooth need to be removed?

The canine will only need to be removed if it is way off course or damaging the other teeth.

How will the tooth be treated?

Firstly the tooth needs to be exposed (uncovered). This usually involves a trip to the hospital. Once exposed the tooth can then be brought into line with a fixed traintrack brace. This is complicated and can take up to two years.

Will I still need a retainer?

When the fixed brace is removed a retainer will be constructed which will need to be worn at night.

How long will the retainer need to be in place?

The retainer will normally be worn at night for a year. Without the retainer the canine can move back a little bit.

Will there be any permanent damage?

No damage will occur due to moving the tooth. However, poor cleaning and too many fizzy drinks can cause permanent decay marks around the fixings of the traintrack brace. The importance of thorough brushing and the use of a fluoride mouthwash cannot be emphasised enough.

Is the treatment permanent, or will I need additional future treatment?

Once the canine has settled into its proper place the result will be stable.
